My friend purchased a D3100 with the VR kit lens. We have been using it and I can take ok pictures. He just bought a used 55mm-200mm Nikon 4/5.6 VR lens, and the UV filter only like a $5 one. I am not really too sure how important a good UV filter is, so is the current one ok, or no?

Also, if someone could help explain to me how I am supposed to decide what shutter speed to use on far away, slow moving targets.

UV filters are useless now days as all lenses have uv coatings now
they normally just degrade the image quality, the main reason people do use them is to protect their lenses from scratches

basic rule of thumb is NEVER drop you shutter speed lower than your focal length, so if u using the lens at 200mm then dont go below a shutter speed of 1/200, better to keep it around 1.5x so around 1/300

I always keep a UV filter on my lenses when not using another filter for some specific photo. A really crappy uv filter is not going to help your photographs, especially around the corners. I have had great results with holga filters.
