So first of, I'm pretty sure I want a canon because I'm pretty familiar with it and it fits my logic, arguments to think of a different brand will go in to consideration tho.

For some time I wanted to purchase a proper camera and now I'm about to go on a couple of months backpacking and would like to have a camera that fulfills more then the average point and click or superzoom can give me. Tho I will be carrying it through the jungles and mountains or whatever I will encounter.

Anyone got some advice on good bodies and maybe a set of lenses that would cover a good range without carrying around to much. Maybe advice on the above situation and camera. Tho while the trip acts as an catalyst in to buying it, I don't have an endless supply of cash so it should also have to forfill my needs in the urban setting where it doesn't matter that much if you drag around alot of crap.

Also, how do the 3/4th camera's compare to the dslr?

Thank you in advance,

-Wicked

for that requirement i really wouldnt suggest a SLR of any kind, as they are way to bulky and heavy (even more so if you get a decent lens or 2)
look at the Canon G12 or G1x, image quality is supurb, the zoom lens is good and its reasonably compact and light

or go with a little cheaper mirrorless from sony (nex) they have very good quality and are light.. canon will have it`s mirrorless camera also ready in the next couple of weeks... so that could be a alternative..

Mirrorless camera best fits on what you want, you have the compact lightness of a point and shoot and the lens customization of a dslr.
