To better my understanding so when it comes time to buy, I will be able to make the decision on my own.

Maybe magazines?
Articles online?
Youtube videos?

Thanks for the advice!

sry, i dont understand your question.

if the question is how you can get a better general knowladge about iso and cameras and everything, it comes down to:

buy sth. play with it. get to know anything. make mistages. know the mistakes. correct the mistaked. buy something better. have more fun, enjoy what you are doing.
There are lots of sites like www.dpreview.com testing cameras and iso settings and there is www.fstoppers. doing some video reviews (Also popular is that guy: http://www.youtube.com/user/DigitalRevCom ) who does reviews.
But to get a good understanding and feel you gotta try yourself. there is no way around it :D

I've shot cameras before for quite some time.
I want to gain book smarts about the machines so I know what I need to look for and what would fit my style of photography.

Maybe check out flickr. There are plenty of "meet-up" groups spread around in the various cities in the world and they usually include a get-together where you can learn a lot from others.
