So Im looking into getting a lighting kit, and its all a bit confusing. My head is starting to hurt so I figured Id just ask for advice here

I have a little at home studio setup, and I thought it would get more natural light, but so far its been pretty disappointing. I need something extra, so Im looking into a kit. I have a few that Im looking at, I just need to know what seems best.

Im open to other suggestions, Id like to stay in the price range that these are in though. Im getting a backdrop from lemondrop and those things arent cheap xD

Thanks :3

at that price you really dont have many options, personally i would stay away from constant lighting
i suggest going with speedlite's that makes it easy to add on as you get more $$$

yongnuo yn-560ii
yongnuo rf-603
light stand
easy fold soft box

and then when you have more funds available you buy another set

i wouldnt get a proper backdrop, rather just get some cheap material or bedsheets etc (ikea ftw)

If I may take advantage of your topic to ask a question also...
Which is better or easier to use.... an umbrella with a flash or with continuous lighting?
I also am confused by indoor light...

Im worried about getting a cheap speedlite though, that was something I was planning to spend a bit more on. I feel like it might be a waste of money to get a cheap one, you know?

The whole soft box thing just confuses me :(

Can you explain the setup a little more? Maybe with pictures? Haha.

I have a TON of fabric backdrops, as well as paneling that I got from Lowe's. But Im doing my first newborn shoot soon, and Id like to use something a little nicer :x

Also if anyone has any links for a better setup Id appreciate it (for softboxes, since that seems to be the better choice).

E: Also keep in mind that my main lighting will still be natural light. I just need something extra to pump it up and kill yucky shadows.

Ex: Dark on his right, only light was from a window, and reflector.

remember about rule that 1 eye is always smaller then other, you should focus on smaller since lens will give little boost so that eyes looks even.
There is nothing wrong whit cheep speedlites and you looking for flexibility over heavy light stands and massive umbrellas...

I have no idea what that is, lol o_o

Ive been advised in the past against getting a cheap speedlite. Cheap lighting equipment isnt as big of a deal to me, Im sure Ill be adding a bunch of stuff over time. I can always keep the cheap lighting stuff around, but a cheap speedlite is kind of wasted when you get a better one, know what I mean? Plus it doesnt need to be all that flexible, Im going to be doing as much as I can out of my home, in one room.

i will do that for you tomorrow, with pictures, links and all
yongnuo make excellent speedlites, build quality is great and they work perfectly, i have 3 and not had a problem with them

the flash should be your main light, you can use ambient and/or reflector as a fill light

constant lighting needs to be plugged in etc but speedlites use batteries so that helps a lot and is 1 of the main reasons to go that route (studio strobes also need power)
constant lighting i guess is easier as you can see what the outcome is gonna be, with speedlites it takes a little practice, but it is in no way difficult and you will pick it up quickly

Much appreciated :D.

Yeah, youre starting to convince me, haha. I am a little worried about learning to compensate for the extra light..I use my meter a lot, I feel like Ill probably be confused for a while.

What are those covers called that I see on speedlites sometimes? Should I look into getting one of those if I go with a speedlite?

E: Nevermind I found it on eeeebay, looking for the speedlite.

EE: What type of those is best out of these? Take out the extra e ofc xD
