First off, this is my first time doing any kind of "serious" portrait photography. This is also the first time I've ever used any kind of lighting other than natural sunlight. I'm somewhat desperate for advice and possibly tutorials on studio portrait photography.
In my photography fundamentals class, we were allowed to use 3 different studio lights that our teacher brought in as well as pick a partner to shoot. This is my new friend Tino. I used one light that was low to the ground to try and really accentuate his face. PLEASE critique this! (PS, the large black area is his shoulder)

The way you shot this makes him loook creepy. lightaimed from below does this.
most portraits need a bette front-to-side face ratio. usually 3/4. yours is like 7/8.
