D3100 if you plan on making this a hobby, forget the rebel series.

Go for this if you plan on ever making money with photography.

Because Canon is the smarter business sense. I'm not just talking about performance. Canon is simply more known. As a potential client, I'd be more impressed with a popular brand I know than some rather 'obscure' (hopefully someone gets the pun) brand.

Why not the d5000 over the d3100? I know it doesn't auto focus with all lenses, but the sensor is superior. And I can get the d5000 + kit lens for only 500, probably the second best deal right now.

Are you saying "go with the canon if you want to make money" because I'll eventually upgrade and still have canon lenses?

Thanks for the input.

I'm a graphic/web designer who would be using it to expand my stock image library.

That is one of the reasons, yes. My biggest reason is the danger Nikon is in by having Sony make its sensors.

Care to explain a little more? I'm fully unaware of the situation.

And overall, you'd take the 3100/5100/7000 over the t1i/t2i/t3i?

If you can afford it, 7000. Otherwise, I'd go Canon.
