I would have composed it a bit differently and tried to emphasize the light going through the fog/smoke a bit more as it's the only thing that really stands out.
I edited it a bit closer to how I think It should look... but I went a bit overboard on the editing.

Oh and even cheap cameras will allow you to change some exposure settings...so you could have gotten the sky exposed properly.
