because I've never done this and they insist on paying me however I want to learn more and more different styles! A band wants me to take photos of them for their promotional media. I haven't done much portraiture and especially not with guys, any suggestions? should I even take it?

might as well, good practice, its not like they're a superstar band is it? and besides if you know how to compose photos, with enough shots you're bound to get a few good ones

I'd say go for it!

Are you taking photos of them in action while playing? If so, that's better! then you don't have to worry about them posing or anything.

I'm not whining and no I won't get ownage to help me are you kidding? I'm here to learn and I know he'll charge me for help. he had me take free shots of his motorcycle and traded that off for a lesson in external lighting. I'm grateful but I can't have someone hold my hand forever... now if it were someone that's as good as you teaching me then sure! I remember you kept telling me that ownage wasn't photography but photoshop...

a photographer would never let go of chance to get new experience if he/she would love the things he/she can do with camera
