A used 40d is what I would go with.

Get a T3 or used XSI and spend the rest on a good lens :p
btw T3 seems to be an improved version of XSI.

Nikon just announced a 50mm f1.8G lens which seems to be a million times better than the crappy Canon version. It got much better AF, a real manual focus ring, distance scale, metal mount and most importantly much better aperture blades which means better bokeh.
So yeah... unless you want to spend 400 bucks on a Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM you might as well go for Nikon if you are interested in cheap 50mm primes :D

Personally I think you should go for XS or T3 and save money for a good wider prime than 50mm. Either 35mm f1.4L or Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC.

will have to wait for tests and reviews
but dont think it is going to be that much better, to warrant the price
think it would be better sticking to the old 1.8D for less or paying the extra and get the 1.4G (or D if you can find it)
