uhmmm that has nothing to do with being a noob. it´s just a silly question imO. What is a 18-55mm lens for? what is a 70-200mm lens for?

the 18mm provide you a pretty wide angle for landscape, architecture and what not, and the 200mm enable you to get some range if you wanna shoot sports, portraits or animals or stuff that is farer away. now why do they build a 18-200mm lens? BEcause they want you to be super flexible and dont have to switch between lenses. disadvantages of sucha lens will be a rather worse image quality and sharpness.

It's like the 15-500 Sony lens. It automatically lets you shoot your niece's wedding, despite not knowing anything else about your camera.

You sure you don't mean the 50-500? I've never seen nor even heard of a 15-500..

To be serious, this type of lens (superzoom) is one that you will use if you only want to carry one lens and don't care about image quality. In my opinion if you're going to get a lens like this you might as well just get a nice point and shoot instead.
