Same here. The best I have is some mountains, and even for a good view of those I need to drive a bit..

Don't you have some deserts around though?

I think the photos are not sharp enough.

Check this page: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html, there is a DOF calculator that will help you find the ideal settings for the Hyperfocal distance. Also making a panorama shot and resizing it using Bicubic (sharper) settings in PS helps to make the images sharper.

And of course if you go at sunset with an ND8 filter and a tripod to shoot the waves that will make a HUGE difference

you must remember that every lens has an optimum setting regarding both focal length and aperture
in general zooms are not as sharp at there min/max and aperture mid-high setting
what was your setting and equipment used?

Canon 400D (xti)
Sigma 10-20mm

I'll give the first picture's settings:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chantal7/5510726705/meta/

Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 10 mm
ISO Speed 400

So to figure out the best setting with that lens, I can use that link you provided?

main problem is your aperture, try using an aperture no less than f/11, f/22 etc would be better
therefore longer exposure, and obviously iso can be dropped down as low as possible
always try shoot with lowest iso possible

let me know how it comes out
