mainly want to use it for portrait photography.

wide angle is not for portrait photography, it distorts the subject
for head shots you need 105mm+ (85+ is good on cropped sensors)
for medium shots - full length body shots 50mm+ is recommended

if you dont already have a 50mm prime almost everyone will recommend getting a 50mm f/1.8
amazingly sharp, fun and cheap lens

He is kidding coz normally peolpe medium tele photo lenses for portraits...

Or because Canon suck when compared to Nikon wide-angle lenses.
