I'm interested in getting a nice strong flash so I can bounce it instead of having to rely on a built in forward mounted one. I've gone to school for photography and have books about how to diffuse, bounce etc and will read them more when the time comes. However what my books don't have is a listing of which flash units work good, and what they work good for. So if any of you have a suggestion for a flash that can be mounted on a Nikon D-70 please let me know.

INB4: GET A CANON (I'd love to get a nice canon, but don't have the money right now so hush please).

He's mad because even Nikon users say Canon is >
I've used the sb900 and it's a good flash. It will be nice and strong. Be sure to buy Sanyo Eneloops (~10 USD / x4), since they've proven to be the most effective rechargeable batteries and supposedly last up to like 800 recharges. The recycle time on these batteries is incredible though! For my Canon 580 EX II, it's like <. 5 of a second! I've recharged 30 times in my oldest Eneloop set and the recycle time is maintained. It also lasts pretty long, and you don't have to re-charge after every use, since they stay fully charged for months.

I use a YN-560. Pretty cheap alternative. It doesn't have an screen but goes from 1/1 power down to 1/128 power. Has 28-135 zoom I believe, top pull out reflector and diffuser. It can swivel and turn just like any other good flash. The only problem I have found with it is the lock down mechanism. However, it's the same one that is on the Metz and even the Canon 460s or whatever they are.

can you recommend it? I thought about getting 2 new flashes and I think I`m going for two YN-460 II or one of that plus a YN-560.

I plan to buy another if I need to get a second flash. So yes, if you don't mind what you lose from the Canon or Nikon version I'd go for it.

Strobist did a nice review on it..

Can't post the URL here so just go look it up on the Strobist site.

I have not experienced any sort of problems like they have had. However, I also bought mine quite some time after this was written.
