Had a photo shoot with my daughter's gecko gargoyle yesterday...
Was holding it close to the window, with me in between the window (natural light) and the little reptile..
So hard to get the eye in perfect focus with 2 moving objects.. my hand holding the gecko and my hand holding the camera...
Then on the computer, tried to see how I could make it fit the rules of photography, and couldn't figure it out, so I left the main subject (the eye) in the middle and we'll have to deal with it :p

He (we think it's a 'he' ) is believed to be around 6 months old, so a juvenile.
He won't get much bigger than 8 inches long in its adult form.
Santa brought my daughter a terrarium and I was to give her a gecko if her grades were good and she made good efforts in her homework.
This little reptile is so cute and fun to handle! It eats crickets and apple sauce.
There will be more pictures to come obviously :)

Blah, screw rule of thirds. Who goes by rules anyways? I just take pictures so they look good to my eye, not anyone else's.

Great work on this, you focused well, seeming as you took this with one hand only!

Your pictures are getting better each time I see new ones. :)

another amazing shot!
As for the rule of thirds. Well I've always liked the saying rules are meant to be broken :D
I don't think it is even that important in portrait photography :)

Thank you for the nice comments!
Since I don't have a macro lens and this lizard is small, I dug out my old Cokin filters from 20 years ago..
I used a +3 close-up filter (A103) and noticed it gave me very shallow DoF so I had to compensate a lot if I wanted the eye to be completely in focus and the body not to be completely blurred...
I'll try next photoshoot without the filter and crop the image to see what works best..

@jayandnix I think just about any reptile would make a great subject and if you are not afraid of them, they are a very sweet pet!
The advantage of geckos, is that they remain quite small and you don't need to get a large place to keep them.
This one live in a tropical 12x12x18 vivarium with a 75W heat lamp and a UV lamp as well.
It feeds off crickets and baby fruit food, and it doesn't mind being handled by kids.

@Alpi, I love almost all animals but reptiles are so fascinating! They look like tiny dinosaurs!
This one changes colors as well! It can turn to chocolate brown to white to reddish brown or have darker spots, all in a matter of a few seconds!

@Chantal and Futurama, the title about the rule of third was only to bring some attention... I try to follow the rules, but I honestly didn't see how I could have with this shot

Rules can be broken once you've mastered them. I think you've mastered them marie :)

Great picture, the hands actually work quite nicely as a frame for the picture. The gecko's eyes are brutally sharp!

P.S- Do some noise reduction :P
