I was thinking of purchasing a digital camera to expand my ideas and pictures etc since I only shoot film.
'
I am looking for a nice camera that someone with very good camera knowledge would be impressed with and does a great job of delivering high quality photos. I am not looking for auto focus or zoom lenses, although if it's optional I don't mind if its on there.

I was thinking about http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/675618-REG/Canon_4462B003_EOS_Rebel_T2i_Digital.html

Comments would be appreciated. My range is about $1000.

the lens on that kit is pretty much garbage. if you would be happy with just a 50mm lens, i would suggest buying used 5d and 50mm 1.8, you should get those for about 1k $. dunno if you know about crop factor, but cheap digital cameras like that have a crop factor(canons with 1.6). its basically same as cropping your image after its taken when using full frame(like 5d) or 35mm film(you wont be able to handle dept of field as well as you can on bigger sensor/film, you need wider lenses for wide shots etc). even tho that 50mm lens is cheap and plastic, it has really good iq for the price, but af is bit noisy and focus ring is pretty crappy. you could use old manual lenses with an adapter, some of them have really good iq and are dirt cheap. also viewfinder is much better in 5d than cheap cameras with crop factor like that T2i

what system are you using now?

The t2i is a very capable body. For $1000, I would suggest either that or a used 50D / 5D. The 5D is a bit dated, but it's an awesome camera.

The real deal breaker though is the lens budget...lenses are expensive. The 18-55 IS isn't a fantastic lens, but it's not as bad as Antichrist would have you believe. It's fairly sharp stopped down and worth the extra $100 or whatever that you spend to add it to the kit. The 50 f/1.8 is a lens that everyone recommends, and I would say it's worth the price because its so cheap. Another bargain is the 55-250 IS.

Read some reviews and choose what you think fits you best. $1000 is a bit limiting, because you'll also want:

Tripod
battery grip?
memory cards
camera bag
lens cleaner (lens pen, sensor klear, rocket blower)
filters
remote shutter release

Remember, a T1i with a good lens will take better pictures than a 5D mk II with crappy glass. Lenses also hold their value, so you should invest in lenses rather than bodies. You have a lot of options on which way to go.

I'm sure Canon will announce a new camera on January. Perhaps you should wait until then?

what brand of film camera. you could use most lenses from a film cameras on canon digitals with adapter. if you got good set of manual glass that can be mounted to 5d, you could put all of your money on the body if you dont care about af lenses that much. if you are going to use manual lenses mainly i strongly suggest buying 5d instead some cheap dslr, the viewfinder on those cheap cameras is just horrible so it would be really hard to get the focus spot on with them. not to mention that 5d is full frame and beats all of those cheap cameras(and cameras that cost the same new as 5d costs used) in every way, except that newer models can shoot video, live view and they have better lcd screen and small stuff like that, but those things shouldnt matter much if you are used to shoot film.
