So, earlier I was looking at that beautiful 24-70mm .... and I just am not sure I want to spend that much at THIS moment.

How likely is it that the price will go down on the 24-70mm?
https://www.thecamerastore.com/products/lenses/slr-lenses/zoom-lenses/canon-ef-24-70mm-f28l-usm

Another option...

I want a new lens! I am getting bored and I want to try something different than the 50mm and boring god damn boring kit lens :wallbash:

What are Canon's macro lenses called?

I might... I just MIGHT consider getting a macro instead of the 24-70... depending on prices and the time. I won't be buying this soon.

What macro lenses would you guys recommend? I know NOTHING about what I should look for in these types of lenses

Thanks for your help.... this is a sad day!

Whenever I feel lazy, I often do a whole wedding with just 24-70 2.8L lens. It's a great lens that will let you earn moneys to buy more stuff.
I also have the 100mm L IS 2.8 macro. It's sharp, works for macro, portraits, and a great walkaround lens. You can zoom up to 1:1, and even crop some because it's so sharp.

Imo the 24-70 > the 100mm because you are able to do more with it. However, your kit lens covers a similar range.
Have you considered a used 70-200L F4? It's very sharp and will greatly compliment your setup. I bought a 70-200F4 L IS for $500 used but it didn't have a single scratch or any wear. It was still under 8 month factory guarantee! Guy just wanted to get the 2.8 MK II. A regular 70-200 F4 non-is should be 400-500$, which is way cheaper than the 24-70.

Well, If I did that sort of thing for money, then sure I'd have more money to get more lenses. Unfortunately, this is just a personal for fun hobby that I do at free will not cause I have to :).

I have considered used, but I have no experience in even trying to find one... eeeebay is probably my only answer where I'm from. I've even searched for a used 24-70 and they're still up there.

What is the difference between the 24-70 and the 70-200? Obviously the one zooms in more, but the 24-70 has a lower f number... which I like a lot.

If you want really small DoF, primes are your best bet. 70-200 on a cropped sensor is like 120ish - 317, which is an awesome telefoto range. Ever wanted to shoot people without them knowing? Ever wanted to capture real laughters? Ever wanted to shoot something that was out of your reach? Then the 70-200 is right for you! Heck, you can even shoot the moon!

F4 isn't bad. It's a really solid lens. You can try purchasing a lens on photo.net, photography-on-the.net, or even fredmiranda.com (eek and I have an account so u can do it for free, at least through me). Just one thing to remember: just like with used cars, if someone is selling a lens it's because they 1) found something wrong with it 2) found something better 3) really need the money. Search for only #2 or 3.

Hmm.... So the 24-70 is a prime? Sorry, it's still confusing sometimes :).

The 70-200 sounds really convincing for a used deal. What's the lens itself like in terms of quality?

I'll check out the sites you linked there, so people sell stuff there? That's kind of neat. Thanks for that.

Haha, well the problem with people these days is that they sometimes don't tell you they are selling it because something's wrong. :D

Edit: What things will I be missing out on if I choose the 70-200 instead of the 24-70?

Lens prices rarely ever go down, they actually appreciate in value. Even if a new 24-70L MK II hits the market, the Mark I will not drop in price.

There are alot of macro lens for the canon mount.

Canon 60/2.8 Macro
Canon 100/2.8 Macro
Canon 100/2.8L IS Macro
Canon 180/3.5L Macro
Sigma 105/2.8 Macro
Tamron 90/2.8 Macro etc

Also, on the other hand, you can get a set of Kenko extension tubes which reduces the minimum focusing distance of your lens.

A 24-70 will bring better IQ to your images yet offer roughly the same amount of range as your kit and 50mm prime lens. If you want something totally different, i suggest a telephoto (Canon 55-250 or a Canon 70-200/4 non-is), a wide angle (which i think you have already), a Macro (which you are considering), or a fisheye/ tilt/shift lens.

eebay, Kijiji, Craigslist, PoTN forums, and FM forums are few places where you can buy used equipment. If you research and look for good deals, you can buy used.. use them for 6-12 months and still resell them with little to no money lost if you baby the lens ofc.

As for the difference between 24-70 and 70-200/4.

24-70 = speed, heavy (it's call the brick for a reason), great general walkaround lens.
70-200= range, telephoto compression, attention (being a white lens),

I find it easier to get candid shots with a black lens then a white... 135L ftw :D

P.S- How the hell do you know i have a account on FM forums? T_T stalker much. I have a buy and sell account on FM too.

A prime is a lens that doesn't zoom, like a 50 mm, or a 135 mm, etc.
A zoom is a 70-200, which means that it ranges from 70mm to 200 mm

The only thing you'll be missing out on the 24-70 is a higher-quality wide-ish, standard use lens vs a telephoto lens. Both are sharp, especially the 70-200.

WTF? It's a white lens? :O Very cool!

Also, what is telephoto compression?

I suppose the 24-70 is a lens that is the kit + 50mm in one, at a much higher quality.

The thought of taking pictures when people aren't looking would be  with the 70-200 (ps, why do you say non-IS?)

Good info you posted here, thank you very much. I'll definitely go back to this when I am ready :D

I've never been to any of the sites you've listed, except eeeebay, but that's still noob for me. I will have to check them out, I've heard of them though.

Here's a comparison on sizes: the left is 24-70L vs the 70-200 L IS F4. Box of cheerios is to show a base that you can relate to, plus free advertisement for cheerios coz it's a good cereal. There is no difference in size in is and non-is version. They're heavy tho.

The white lens is sexy and will turn heads.
