Ok so a friend of mine had a nikkor AF-S DX 18-70mm lens that hadn't been touched in years and sat there collecting dust. I was able to clean the outer glass and such but I know there's still some dust inside the lens but anyway I was playing with it and noticed it won't go further than 50mm and just stops and I was wondering if I was possibly doing something wrong or if maybe all that time untouched finally did it in... I'm just curious. This friend had it from his sister who left it at his house years ago and never picked it up so he has no clue how to use it and he can't get a hold of the sister...
I know some lenses go up to a certain mm then lock, then another barrel is turned, allowing it to go further, but that's just with an old lens I have for my film body...
It could be a bunch of different things, but it sounds like something is stuck, or jammed, causing the rail the lens uses to glide in/out to zoom has something blocking it from sliding all the way.
Again, it could be a large possibility of different things, dust would probably be the easiest assumption.
You could bring it into a camera store, I wouldn't recommend taking lenses apart unless you know what you're doing.
