At the moment I am using a simple Olympus SP 560 UZ camera to take photos. I would like to buy a DSLR camera. Preferably a Canon EOS.

I thought of a 50D but some professionals suggested I should rather buy a 7D due to its better ISO capabilities, meaning less crispness in nightphotos with high ISO.

So basically I would like to use my camera for all purposes: nature photos, city photos, portraits, sport and other events, night shots, and so on...

What camera would you recommend me to buy (I cannot afford the high end DSLRs like EOS 5D Mark II and so on...). I am looking in the same price category as the EOS 50D. I am only interested in Canon cameras.

Looking forward for some suggestions.

Thanks,

p.s.:want to buy the camera in Europe

uhmm you´re saying it comes down to the 50d or the 7d. then you say you are looking for something in the 50D´s price range. soooooo..... that doesnt quite make sense because the 50D costs around 700-800 bucks atm and the 7D still costs around 1300. I wouldn´t call that the same price range tbh.

PS: I´m talking about €. but the proportion should be the same in the states or something.

I´d say, if you can afford the 7D, go for it. you´ll have urself a good semi-pro DSLR with alot of potential for great photos. but you should also be aware that there is a second part to where photos come from. at least as important as the body, are the lenses you use. And the good ones aren´t really cheaper than the actual bodies nowadays. So you might wanna take that into consideration.

So lets sum up.

Lets say you have 1500 bucks to spend.

For that bunch of money you can get the 7D combined with a standard kit lens.

BUT, there is a possibility that you´ll soon find out that you are looking for better lenses. Good lenses usually start from 500 bucks to OPEN END. Then you still dont have a tripod, a camera bag, filters, a flash etc etc etc.

So, lets say you get the 50D instead. You´ll spend around 800 bucks for the body, and invest the rest of ur money in a good lens and some equipment you´ll need. or get it as a kit with the standard 17-85mm lens.

I guess the Photos you´ll produce, as a beginner or amateur will pretty much look the same with both cameras. You´ll just have to ask yourself if you need all the extras the 7D has.

7d > 50d - to those who say 'it's not the camera, its the photographer' must have never enjoyed the higher-end cameras.

I have the Canon xsi (not sure of the number equivalent) and I love it!
But I had to chose to get it with 1 or 2 kit lens.
Those kit lenses are made to be replaced...
You WILL need to buy new lenses and they are costly.
So if you are on a budget (like me!!) get the cheaper option and invest in lenses. ;)

ye true. but I assume that a beginner / amateur, who most likely doesnt even know how to max out such a camera, you can do about the same photograph with both the 50D and the 7D.
