If you're buying the L series, it is likely the only lens you need to start making money off your camera. It's sharp (nothing compared to the 70-200LF4 IS though), tough, and one of my favorite lens.
Your next purchase should be the 70-200 L IS F4 (it's ok even for dark venues and it's less expensive than the 2.8 counterpart).
As usual, lithfkn is right: a UV Filter to protect the front element, the hood should hopefully come with ur purchase (don't skip on it - apart from protecting from flares, it is an additional form of protection)
Hood: It's really no different than any other hood.
Remeber that L Series lens should last you for like 20 years, so be prepared to love it for a long time.
