This ladyI know doesn't want to learn how to calibrate her camera manually. She's looking for a decent DSLR (~$1.000,00) that has a good auto mode. I haven't used auto mode in DSLRs much. I also haven't used Nikon much. Therefore, I ask the jsp Photography forum: tell me of a decent camera with a good auto mode? Thanks.[U]

I don't think any of the high end DSLR has a Auto mode.

On my 50D, it has a CA mode (Creative Auto, where you can adjust for more blur on the background and stationary/ moving subject). And she can also use the program mode. The only benefit buying a DSLR for auto mode compared to a P&S is the sensor size, if she values the IQ so much that shes willing to buy a DSLR just for auto. Why not spend a weekend learning the basics?

I doubt she'll upgrade from the kit lens, something like a Canon G11 would be more suited for her me thinks.

D5000 is good, I took it out of manual for the first time yesterday for my daughters birthday (was afraid of anything being blurry, first birthdays only come once xD) and it was fine. Was a bit laggy, but I guess thats to be expected. If you adjust the settings in manual mode it works quicker/better than just having it in auto mode.

Oh hush, some people are just lazy/have no aspirations to be a photographer.

The thing is DSLR are made for those who either WANT to learn or already know at least the basics photography. As mr nerobellum sarcastically pointed out there is really no reason to buy a sophisticated camera only to use it as a point & shoot. There are a lot of advanced compact cameras out there like Olympus E-p1, E-P2, Sony Nex3 and Panasonic GF1 but even those are meant to be used by amateurs and professionals...
