I need 300 mm range for church balcony. Cannot be a prime. Canon.

28-300 mm 3.5-5.6 L IS USM

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-300mm-f-3.5-5.6-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

or

100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS USM

http://photo.net/equipment/product-detail?product_id=522

I'm already purchasing the 70-200 2.8L IS MKII and selling the 70-200 4L IS I currently have.

Both are pullies so that's always going to be bothersome. Nevertheless, has anyone worked with this?

You already have a 70-200 f/2.8 MK II?

Get a Canon 1.4x Extender.

From sample images from other photog's setup of it with extender. The IQ with 1.4x is extremely good, beating the 100-400L.

Even with a 2x Extender. The IQ is good.

All you lose is one stop of light. Turning your max aperture to f/4.

Either that or get a Stigma (Sigma 50-500 OS [Make sure it's the OS version]) The IQ of that lens is right up there with 100-400L, some argue that it's better.

I do event photography on weekends, which pays for this.

I've had bad experiences with extenders but they were on a different brand. Maybe I'll try the extender.

I hardly trust Sigmas because I've also had bad experiences with third brandsl

I'll rent an extender and see if your sigma suggestion is available for rent. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Yeah np man.

Also just to clarify. With the 2x extender. You lose 2 stops of light unlike the 1 stop from 1.4x. :)

I do too, I shoot horse races... But I only make around $300 per weekend because I split the profit with my dad :( Then the money goes to other things first, sadly. I do, however, plan on saving throughout the year. That way for Christmas I can go all out and buy myself a full frame body with a new lens or two...

I'm a student at university and my lifestyle is incredibly inexpensive. I, therefore, use any money I get to buy photography gear.
