I saw this thread in a photography forum about how much those amateur photographers in there spent on their equipment and it seems many of them are way too rich

You're always going to find better. And you're always going to find many people that are rich when you are not. Being rich isn't everything. It's kind of crappy, but don't be sad because they can afford everything and you can't.

Or maybe they've just worked hard to make their money?

Can't agree more! I truly believe if you want something you have to work hard for it there are no easy ways or shortcuts unless you are born lucky
To me it was worth every penny I have spent on my equipment and I will keep spending and of course learning because it really pays off.
I do see the difference in image quality between cheap lenses and an expensive one:






Well we all have different priorities I mean I had to sell my first DSLR when I decided to move to another country and for awhile I spent most of my money on other stuff. I guess what I am trying to say is you can't have everything you want but I am sure there are things that you have plenty of that would make many of us very envious
