Well I have a Sony Alpha A300 and I'm starting to think I've got problems with my camera. When I take a picture at levels above 400 generally it ruins the photo because of the amount of chromatic noise it introduces into my photographs, but then again, maybe I'm just insane and can't stand imperfections in the quality...

I'd love to see some other peoples' photos taken on levels such as 1600 ISO and higher. Also, am I missing some obvious thing I should be doing when shooting on higher ISO to avoid noise?

I think it's just the sensor your camera has... my camera sucks at 1600 ISO - I wish it could go more ISO. I rarely ever use 1600 ISO... I think it depends on the camera really, but anyone could correct me if I am wrong here.

ISO 1600 (max my camera has)

No other sharpening but convert from raw to .jpegs.

Edit: Body is Canon EOS Rebel Xsi (450D)

A technique i learn both others is shooting at a lower ISO yet overexposing but not clipping in Raw.

Re-editing them in post processing.

You can also use other software such as noise ninja etc.

Ok. I started off photography with a200s. Shot often with those
First off: what lens do you have?
Second: why do you have to use iso 1600?
Third: The A series under 900 is notorious for noisy images. I guarantee that the camera sucks in low light conditions but is decent in moderate light. For example, these are shot with the a200. Fairly decent imo:

You simply have to be really good with your calibration. Slow shutter speed/reduce aperture if you need exposed images. You can even use an aluminum surgical light to autofocus and get some light in dark locations. You'll still get noise in low light anyway.

Quick snap just now. These are straight out of the camera, no post work and no sharpening. 5d mark I / 70-200 f4 IS

Exp: 3200iso 640th @ F4

Full size:

100% crop at focal point:

The shadow side is noisy but the highlights are quite acceptable for 3200. The 5d Mark I is an old camera now don't forget >.<

A lot of what I shoot I can't really carry a light around with me. Like for example, the last time I took my cameras out, I had my A300 with my 28-300mm Sigma and my Minolta X-370 35mm with my 50mm Minolta 1.7/f lens. I was wearing a full snow suit and knee high rubber boots, because I was splashing around in 18 inches of snow and a running stream. I tried shooting with 400 ISO on my A300 and the quality of the image just about made me throw up. It's rather disappointing, I'm considering just moving to Canon, I should have started there.

I have the kind of noise on my 800 ISO that you have on 3200 at 100%. It's rather pathetic..

This is what I'm talking about. It must just be my camera then.

its normal if sony has same noise level at 800 iso than canon with 3200 ^_^ . you talked about huge noise and if you got that low noise at 800iso what lithfkn had in his photo, thats not much noise at all..

Try getting a proper exposure if you are going to shoot high ISO.

Also, don't use high ISO if you don't have too. While you can shoot in lower light it tends to make the photos soft. This is the trade-off. high ISO = low light shooting/softer images.

I put this here. It's some ISO 1600 shots taken with Olympus gear at a theatre/show. You can read the guys thoughts on the matter. He used to shoot Nikon but switched.
