An off-camera flash in front of him to fill, a large aperture to throw the back out of focus a bit so you get a smooth background, and you'll get a much better picture. The most important one being the flash, as it'll help you expose properly for both pieces of the photo.
i dont own a flash except for the shitty one on my camera which i avoid using when its not necessary and i was really sad when they put the tarp up cause the colors were awesome but the sun was in the middle so people sittin on the other side couldnt see anything with it there
