Hello, I'm a local freelance photographer and I just received an email from a professional track and field athlete wanting a few photos for his online portfolio.
He wants a mixture of portraits and action shots. Portraits are what I am most experienced in, and I have not done many action photos.

I am wondering, are they any suggestions you all have or tips on settings and so on for getting some nice shots?

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyh7/ That is the camera I will have to shoot with.

Thanks.

Depending on what events he does (Running, shot/disc, hurdles) you'd obviously want to capture him in the moment of those events. An easy and popular shot for sports is adding motion blur to the picture by panning the camera and following your subject as you take your picture.
This will allow your subject to stay in focus, while the rest of the background would be blurred.
Something like this :

Otherwise, you can do a lot of closeups while in action...things like facial expressions and body movement.
