This is why I want a better camera with a 200+ zoom....
I took many pictures as I was approaching the heron that was in the tree at the end of the horses' paddock.
But this was as close as I could get with my point and shoot..
I also found out he wasn't alone.....

Wasn't long that they flew away as soon as they felt I was too close...

I see at least two :P After that I can't distinguish what is part of the tree or what is possibly a heron.

And to be honest, the first shot is perfect the way it is I think. Having a huge zoom on that shot would eliminate some of the color change in the horizon. That color only adds to the shot. Would be nice on the second one though, no doubt. Save your pennies Marie. Soon enough you'll have enough to get one. I'm saving up for the nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR right now, problem is I am also saving for a four wheeler. Dunno which one I want more ^_^

Totally agree to it, its better to leave some space open for imagination in this picture.
I like the first one exactly the way it is because the add of the horizon gives the pictures a special feeling.

And i love the shapes of the grass in the second one before the lighter colors of the sky come.
If it was flying a little higher in the sky the contrast would have been even greater.
But a very good shot!

Its not all about the camera to make good photos, it needs talent and a special sense for the right motive and moment.
You got this, no doubt about that :)

I love those pictures but... it looks like there's a lot of quality degradation on both.

You can see it very well around the heron's neck, e.g.

Looks like a heavy jpg artifact.

those are some beautiful sunset photos :)
Well you don't need extreme zoom lenses for those kind of photos. It's all about focal length. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_length

Haha yeah that first one isn't so bad Marie - it actually looks really neat. And it's cool cause you have to look a little harder to see the other one :)

I'm pretty sure she was talking about a zoom lens with 200mm as the focal length...

Thanks!
I never saw the second one till it flew away, cause it got scared before the one at the top!

Well, with a zoom I wouldn't have had to sneek out on them and have to get so close ;)
As a matter of fact, I think with a 300 I wouldn't even have had to get out of the house
Yes, I'm lazy sometimes haha!!

My camera doesn't perform very well in low light and higher iso than 80..
It's just a little 200$ point and shoot..
I had to set it at 100 and the sune was already down..
It's good in macro overall and when subjects are not too far..
One day I'll be rich and have a better camera...
Or I find a rich boyfriend who can buy me one...

lol well I have heard that Canon offers cheap teleconverters for some of their p&s cameras but I don't know how much they would extend the lens in your camera though.
It actually doesn't have much to do with how much it zooms in when it comes to bird photography you must have a lens with a focal length of at least 300mm. Then there is the focal length multiplier for cameras with sensors smaller than 35mm... it could get really confusing -.-
