It´s everytime better too see an example.. if the whole picture is not sharp you may shaked the cam during the shot? You shot at 200mm? You used an tripod? Your lense is VR?

so lets say theres a big bush and a white wooden pole in front, if i aim at the pole but i want the whole entire shot to be sharp, what do i need to do because it seems to just either focus on the pole or the background

You can try and find an object between bush and pole to focus on..
or if you know, the pole is 5meters away and the bush 15 and there is nothing between you search for something that is ~10 meters away, focus on it but dont release - aim in the direction of the bush etc. and release.. might work ^^..

Hm, shooting at F/22 should do the trick. At that aperture there should be no bokeh or blurring of your background.

f/22 needs ALOT of light thru the lens, so if you use auto priority on camera with f/22 you will most likely get too long shutterspeed and pics will get blurred because motion blur of camera. You should use shutterspeed about same as your focal lenght to get sharp pics, that means 1/250 sec with 250mm lens or 1/50 with 50mm lens(1/50 wont stop much motin blur of objects but keeps your camera shake away with this focal lenght if your carefull that you wont shake the camere at all), if you got vr you can use shorter shutterpees than you focal lenght, how much depends on how good the vr is, if its 3 stops 250mm will let you use 1/75 sec shutterspeed to eliminate the camera shake. How fast the objects are moving to eliminate motion blur you might need to use even like 1/8000sec shutterspeed to aliminate motion blur, but for sharp portrait pics something like 1/250 sec should be enough to eliminate motion blur, with 1/125 sec you might get insane sharp at times, but sometimes just enough for small prints, that is if you dont use longer focl lenght than that or you use vr with it. Normal half cloudy weather get about 1/25 shutterspeed with f/22 and iso 400, if you go to shadow that 1/25 sec will turn to maybe sec or few, then you get massive camera shake blur. If you shoot something really close f/22 wont get everythig in focus, because dept of field depends on how close you focus and how meny millimeters your focal lenght on the lens is. With film because the "sensor" size is larger than crappy point and shoots, you will need to use way more longer lens or go closer to subject to get same frame and that will get background more blurred. Imo learn to use manual mode before getting into half auto mods.

if your aperature mode is on f22.. its going to need a hell of a lotta light or the shutter speed is going to be like 15 seconds...
use a tripod if you want to shoot at f22 or bring it down to f8 or lower.
