I just bought the canon 1000D. I think its great for its price class. I´d rather invest in a nice lens than in a expensive cam. I dont really have experience with nikons either but I can say that the canon worked quite well till now.

Rookie's advice is the best, get a cheap camera, invest in good lenses.

Keep in mind that if you ever plan to shoot film, or wish to advance to full frame frame DSLR's, you'll want glass that's not made for cropped frame cams. IE don't buy Nikon DX and Canon EF-S lenses.

theres no difference in Nikon vs Canon

if u have old lens maybe youre more interested in keeping the mark, otherwise choice is indifferent

price is not a problem within reason, i mean i aint gonna go buy a top of the line camera
will certainly be getting another lense soon, if not right away
what lenses would you recommend?

Lenses depend on what you want to shoot. A fast 50mm lens (35mm lens for cropped bodies) is always good to have for anything, they're light, and can work in low light situation, also, they're cheap.
For wildlife, it depends, if you want sweeping panoramas, a wide lens is awesome, Nikon's got the best wide lenses, no contest (including a beautiful 13mm lens that's on sale on eebay now for $17k). if you want to do macro photography, you'll need something like a 105mm macro minimum, with a 200mm being better suited for shooting insects and such.
For far away animals and sport, you'll want a telephoto, depending on what situations you'll find yourself in, you can get a low light model for lots of $$ or a cheaper, slower lens. A good zoom telephoto would be good here, a prime, while cheaper wouldn't be as useful.
