I like the dog picture better, the way he poses and the background...
But there is something I don't lke about it.. not sure if it's the focus or the light.

But I'm sure the pros in here will be able to put their finger on it :D

the dog picture is nice but u cut his paws off and also its seems just a bit out of focus the cat picture should have been zoomed out more your to close

Dog pic has Too much light on it imo :)

In the cat pic if u have a better background it makes the pic that much better ;)

okay: the dog pic, should i use a flash? and if so, how strong (or light)?

Just make sure that the light on your subject is even and it should be fine. If more ambient the light is the less even it needs to be imo. Of course you could complicate the lighting to make it exactly the way you want it or manipulate it for a more dramatic feel, but even light is usually easier to control as a beginner. Good luck.

Hearing this, I would say to try the dog photo in B&W,
Perhaps that sort of lighting would look good,
maybe high contrast?
Also maybe crop, space seems to empty om the left, it distracts me,
especially as it is so bright.
Idk maybe try it out and Ill let you know what I think.

That could work. High contrast b&ws tend to be very nice.
