My buddy got me into and he had said the d40 is a great starter camera for the price

Well I think it's a lil bit too cheap. There is one rule you need to learn about buying camera equipment, you get what you pay for.
From what I have heard and seen Canon has much better entry level cameras than Nikon. If you can find a new or even used XTI you definitely should get one
