Ok, when I first started posting some pictures here, everything was centered and it's the first thing I had to work on...
So i worked on it and saw very nice results...

But...

Are there any cases when the rule of third (or whatever you call it, not too sure of the right expression for it..) doesn't apply and it is better to center the subject?

For instance... sunset/sunrise... center or not?
Any exemple about this?

Thanks in advance :)

Really, it's whatever you think works best, I can see a sun set/rise working both on a lower 3rd or on a corner.

To be honest though, the rule of thirds is good in general, but it's not neccesary, and can be broken when you think something else is more effective.

Worst comes to worst just shoot a shot you like and another that obeys the rule, and then compare them side by side. The hardest thing is being objective about images you've taken, so ask other people what they think.

The rule is there because in MOST cases, it works well. There will always be time where you will have to break these rules.

For sunsets, I think that centering the sun is boring...but I'm sure it'll work in some cases.

depends on what you think is best.

Not my pictures BTW.

It's worth mentioning that the rule of thirds is still being used in the top pic, even if it's not the sun that's obeying it.

Wow.... you're gonna laugh here....
You just made me realize that the rule of third can be applied vertically as well as horizontally....
So far I think I was only working on the left and right thing, and totally fogot about the low and high....

rules are rules. but sometime when someone break a rule on purpose, the results can be very interesting (and in photography interesting is good :P)

rules are made for braking, but if you dont know how to follow the rules, you cant know when you should brake them.

Do whatever you think is the best. I think the objects on the photo is have a relationship with each other. They are doing a job each, fill out the frame. Your job is to find a balance, and find a angle which is interesting.
