im not sure if i should post process and remove the blades of grass in front of the deer's nose.
any recommendations?

Awe, cute :) I like it. I think it would look better with a bit more DoF. And I think the blades of grass would have been less of a distraction if you used more DoF to give them a blurred effect.

he would have needed to use something like f1.x to blur the grass directly in front of the animal as it is so close.

you can always blur the grass out in post production. You can leave it like this or you can make a smashing job on it.
