What do you need to take photos of?

A 50mm is a lens, like the canon 50mm:

how much money are you willing to spend?

You have three main choices of camera:

Compact: usually small and lightweight, will slip easily into your pocket and have limited features
(D)SLR: A much bigger camera, you can change the lens, along with a LOT of settings, these cameras are usually more expensive and deliver higher quality images

Your camera is a probably a compact camera then. For a beginner to photography you can get a nice camera with a cool lens for <$1000

Obviously the more money you spend the better camera and lens you can buy, but for a beginner you can get some sweet gear for that amount.

Decked out DSLR with a sick lens? Around £4k.

Be aware that megapixels don't mean jack.

I'd still suggest getting a mega cheap film SLR and playing around with that instead of spending more than 200 on a DSLR.
