So I'm looking to purchase a new lens once I save up enough money and actually decide what type of lens I want. To help me (and other people) help decide on future lens's I'd like to make a topic I'm looking to get a version of the 70-200mm, I'm looking for a lens that will cover a 17mm (maybe 24mm) to 60mm+ range that is capable of working in low light.


So pick 1 or 2 lens's and tell us why it's your favorite, or why/what you like about it. If you could, please post examples!

Since I have no other lens's - I choose my 450D's good ol' kit lens - the 18-55mm

Well I guess the EF-s 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens will be perfect for you and your needs BUT it's not a good lens for portraits though because of the narrow maximum aperture still it's a HUGE improvement over your kit lens and you will really love it when taking night photos ^^
Oh and of course it's not very expensive either. Maybe you could get that lens plus a 50mm prime.

Canon 70-200mm F/4L
Canon 50mm f/1.4

i like all 3 of my lenses equally

I've only used it for a week but I love the 85mm 1.8.

Pros:
Looks cool
Nice quality optics
The USM can focus faster than my eye!
Feels very solid for the money
The bokeh
Full-time manual focus

Cons:
Some purple fringing wide open (not apparent until heavy crops are performed)
A little play in the ring (forwards and backwards) This is normal, and not really a con
Minimum focus distance 0.85M - not really a problem for me
Bad hood mount (+canon doesn't give you a hood )

I am being very picky but it was very easy to list the pros.

After using this, I do not think I will ever purchase a zoom lens.

50mm 1,8. If i had more money I would have bought the 1.4. I

Well that lens is nice for portraits but I kinda hate it on my camera because I couldn't get a solid grip of it lol
I am surprised that most people here prefer primes I guess I just don't like walking around with several lenses and change them all the time

you should love primes, coz of all that low light shooting

yea I'm the same way, I really don't want to be switching lens's all the time!

just a quick question, if you guys had to choose would you get a 17-55mm F2.8 or a 70-200 F4 L IS. There is only 100$ CAN difference (the 17-55mm being the cheaper of the two) I'd use the 70-200 for sports mostly, and the 17-55mm as an everyday/low light lens.


and thanks for the feedback I'm looking at getting a 50mm 1.8 sometime in May.

If i was thinking of the F4 IS i'd get the F2.8 non IS
