Just got a new camera and it was kinda expensive for me. Im not as much into the photography scene as a lot, but I still want my pictures to be good.

Its a Canon SD 500 Power Shot Digital Elph. 7.1 mp w/ 3x zoom and 2inch screen. It also has the option of recording movies from what I can tell from what Ive read...

Ive taken a couple of pics so far but Im still trying to get a feel for it.

hmm im not sure what you mean. why do you want opinions on somthing you've bought?

Panasonic DMC-LX3 and canon g10 are the best point and shoots afaik and they cost about as much as that imo. Maybe you could have had some cheap nikon dlsr allso or atleast some used(that i would have recommended)

hmm I am kinda wondering why you are asking for opinions and/or advice AFTER you have bought that camera. Shouldn't you ask around before you bought it? jc

or you could have waited for the Panasonic TZ-6/7. These are gonna be beasts of cameras.

But now that you've got it my advice is to know it inside out and practice!

I think he is asking for a god advice or 2 what do if he want good photos from his new camera.

I was just wondering if it was actualy a decent starter camera or if I just got an overpriced pos.....

My last camera was a Polaroid 1 Step ( I sense flames coming) This has so many functions Im still trying to figure out wat all of the signs and stuff are. I know it takes very clear pics and has great color..... It definately brightens darker objects.

polariods are great fun.

I think it is seriously overpriced if you paid $400 for it. I think a panasonic TZ5 is a much better camera and it is <$250 (Also records HD video, 720p)

Well i think the canon powershot is a great camera to use when youre pretty new to photography, a cheaper one might have also worked but now you at least got a decent camera.
