not sure about your d40, but grab your 50d and go into flash control. then hit built in flash func. setting then change shutter sync. to 2nd curtain. Set a long exposure then find a subject. Do the same as you did in the pics you posted but involve your subject, which will stay still but you will still have the trailing effect on the lights.

dont worry its ok

The C1-3 is where the camera remembers your settings for quick access. Lets say you go for a walk. You would maybe want C1 set with a small aperture to get lots in focus and C2 with a fast shutterspeed in case you saw some wildlife. .

Av is where you select how much light the camera lets through the lens, and the camera will select the shutterspeed required to make your photo of a correct exposure

yeh its in built in flash function settings, just look for 1st curtain and change to 2nd smile.gif

oh ok!
i was getting 2nd curtain mixed up with C2.

so C1-3 means like when its on you can set it to certain settings whenever you want and it will be there until you change them?

what about Tv,P,CA

and whats the difference when i put the setting on 2nd curtain?
and should i still have it under Av, or which one do you think is the best to have it under?

Ok. firstly:

'P' is program mode it is fully automatic (the camera selects shutterspeed and aperture) but in P mode you can tweak lots of settings. If you ever get confused with the other modes, just switch to 'P' and ull be fine

'Tv' stands for time value, its the opposite of 'Av' so instead of selecting the aperture, you select the shutterspeed.

'CA' is creative auto and it explains stuff, so there is no technical terms. Like instead of shallow dof it says 'blur backround' and stuff like this.

you can use 2nd curtain with Av, becuase you proberbly wanna use a small aperture anyway smile.gif

Use the "M", set the shutter speed to like 10secs and the if the light is low set the F low. To "remove" reflecting light from surroundings tru to use a higher F. But U will need more light from the lightsource you want to capture.

Try something out, you will find what it is the best for you. I did that myself. smile.gif
