I am deciding between the two.. website says 50d is more automatic than 40d and night shots are clearer.. anyone can vouch this ?

Try find some reviews. I think there are some 40d vs. 50d out there.

from the reviews ive seen the 50D is not worth the money. They all say it has a few nice features but IQ and ISO performance are the same, if not better on the 40D.

I've compared the specs and prefer 40d. However, I am also interested in getting the 18-200mm lens which in shops, only comes along with 50d. 50d is alittle over budegt for me. If buying a 40d body and a 18-200mm separately definitely doesn't sound cost efficient as well. Some shops offer the dual lens kit, but am not really in favour of carrying 2 lenses around if you have the option of having 1 lens with the same focal length.

I am also thinking of getting a wide angle. Have tried a tokina canon mount 11-16mm f2.8. Loved it. Looks great even on crop. Would like to know if anyone has used canon 10-22mm or the tokina 11-17mm fisheye? Are you able to see the fisheye effects on crop?

The 40D is the best price/performance camera on the market at the time, I would go with that.
Also I would not suggest a super zoom as the whole point about using a DSLR is to be able to change lens. The super zoom is slow and IQ is subpar with similar 2 lens combos.

The tokina 11-16 is an amazing lens.

50d isnt really better than 40d, its just newer, with bigger screen and new software, 50d is just an overpriced version of 40d imo
