Once I get my DSLR I'm going to need to organize my photographs so I was wondering what everyone uses to catalog their photographs. Do you just put them in a dated/named folder or do you use a dedicated program? I'd like to find some type of program that allows me to quickly organize and view my photos.

Also, I would like to know how you guys categorize them smile.gif

thanks!

By date and subject.
All in the "Photos" Folder, hidden. I use Lightroom 2 Extended for workflow happy.gif (It's the best) and CS4 to edit.

By date. Camera uploads them to a file, for example: 3_04_2009 (March 4, 2009) and yeah! I find it harder to find photos, sometimes, but it helps just using the small thumbnail on the folder to see what it's about. Sometimes I'll even rename the folder, keeping the date there, still.

I have them all in folders, inside the photo folder, which are in more folders.
So it's like this.

Photos>Elbow Falls Photos Jan13th/09 (Or whatever the photos inside are from) > (Then big list of photos here) >Best > (With small list of the best shots here, which are imported to lightroom, and edited in CS4)

That's how I do it happy.gif

i just type the date of the upload on the folder and then if they were taken in a specific place that place, or sometimes (not so much anymore) i'd have a folder called sunsets where i put all my sunset photos,
i've gotta resort all my photos soon coz i have no convention really on how i sort them tongue.gif
oh and sometimes especially with what i've been doing lately i'll have dated folder (upload date) then inside it sort photos into different categories for location or style...

lol It's interesting to know how others organize their pictures. I usually just sort them by date and file numbers. Like IMG_101 and IMG_102, the higher the number is the more recently they were taken and of course looking at the thumbnails is actually the only way I would be able to find the pictures I was looking for lol. I am not really good at organizing stuff or at least I am usually too lazy to do some serious organizing lol.

i wish there was something like itunes that had a library of the files and had date taken , location, and any other details u wanted and a group for styles and took all the other details off the photo that the camera records like the settings used so u could just select which column u wanted to sort by and it would show u those taken under that category, but i get the feeling something like this probably costs money

Are you actually paying money for software? lol jk
Personally I think organizing and naming the pictures in numbers and looking at the thumbnails are quite enough but of course later on I may will create one catalog for each year or one for each season especially the summers when I most likely would take a lot of pictures lol.

i'm a student i can't afford to pay for software, i might look into making some crude app if i get the time and a friend to run me through some basic things in c++ , cause i reckon it would be easy enough to have a basic program for this , i'm going drinking with a friend tonight who codes a lot i might ask him what he thinks about coding it,

edit: well just did a quick google search and one of the 1st things that came up (conveniently wink.gif) was picasa
seems to be a decent free option might look into it when i get home just dling it now and will xfer it to my computer @ home via usb memory stick smile.gif

Pros

    * Picasa is free. Integrates with other free Google services (Blogger, Web Albums, and Google Earth).
    * Provides good red-eye removal, quick fixes and effects, and online sharing options.
    * Editing info is stored in INI files, making all edits reversible without saving multiple versions.
    * Designed for non-techies and casual digital photographers.
    * Available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms.

Cons

    * Tied to a folder-based system of organization.
    * Limited organizational and searching features.
    * No way to edit a photo's embedded date.
    * Litters your computer's folders with Picasa.ini files.

Lucky you for having a computer nerd as a friend, no offense to him lol. I know what you mean about not being able to afford to pay for software especially those made by Adobe rolleyes.gif. Well I guess if you can make your own software it's all better smile.gif.
