something akin to the b setting on a manual camera, the shutter stays open as long as you have the button pressed down

You mean "Bulb" setting? I'm assuming that's what it means...

B setting is like, however long you hold down the shutter button on the camera, is how long it will stay open. Wireless remotes are the best for this, to reduce camera shake. Other than that, it's pretty new to me as well.

AAHH Yes.
B could = the BULB setting I guess.

Go into complete MANUAL mode.
Then keep bringing the shutter speed from 1>, 10>, 30>, BULB.
(BULB is the setting after a 30 second shutter speed)
