The canon equivalent to the D80 is the Xsi//450D. Canon Entry level cameras are better than nikons, so are the lens. If you dont own any Nikon lens' Id go for a Canon rebel xsi. Owning one, they are really nice to use and packed full of features, with great image quality and fab noise control.

I think there's 5 of us using one in this forum atm and to my knowlage we all really like it.

Any topic started by myself, TheBlackRose66 and Qhotex will normally contain pictures taken with a 450D. There are some other users but i can't remember who they are!

Hope this helps!

400d with kit lens and a 50mm 1.8, then i think you will have some money left for tripod or some used flash maybe. Buying flash used is safe because they dont really have eny braking parts and should work for a loong time if they worked when u bought it. Some flashes like 30 years old still work. Or if u want bigger zoom, u could buy 55-250mm is, but i think it would go bit over of your 900$ budget

We've gone over this numerous times, however this is different.
Xslaya and Doyleoa both had budgets under about $800, so the XSi would be a good choice for them imo.

However, you have a $1600 budget to stated, this means that you could get better than an XSi.

I would probably recommend a Canon 40D OR a Nikon D90 OR Nikon D300 (The D300 is a little more on the expensive side however, you might not be able to find for $1600 with a lens)

From personal experience, I would tell you to get a small list of comparable cameras and go in stores to test them out and get a feel for them to see which one
you prefer.

I know, but he will be getting $1600.
I just said if he wants to spend a little more he can get a really good camera with that much.

But if he is only going the spend $900 the XSi is great. (I have it and love it)

I'd reccomend getting a half-decent DSLR but not a very expensive one, sensor quality is more important than MP's and anything above 10MP is excessive if you never plan on printing above A4 size.
I'd also reccomend getting a decent medium format film SLR for when you want to take very high quality images.
