Looking to invest in my first SLR camera. But can not decide between a canon rebel or a nikon d40. Any opinions are wanted.

Well, it's quite a simple question actually.
You see, when you buy a Nikon D40, you ONLY going to be able to use the NEWER Nikkor lenses with it. This means, you won't be able to find
any older lenses that will work with the camera.
Canon on the other hand has a MUCH larger lens capability. You can use ANY Canon EF or EF-S mount lenses (Even those from years ago) AND
you can find Tamron, Sigma and other lenses that will work with Canon too. (This is definitely useful because you can go on eebay and find some great condition lenses from 2 or 3 years ago
that will work perfectly with the Canon camera. And, you will find them much cheaper.)
Any Canon you buy will also have a better AF-Point system than the D40.
Assuming your budget is around the Nikon D40's $450, I would definitely suggest you look into the Canon EOS 1000D/XS.
Canon's main entry level camera.
