I took a photography class last year at my school, and I'm getting more into photography.
So now that I have a steady job I'm looking to buy a camera.
I want to spend a MAX of $550 if I can, but I don't want something that takes shitty pictures.
I was thinking of the Nikon D40 or the D60 but I'd like to hear your thoughts and suggestions on those cameras or any other camera you'd recommend.

Also, if anyone has sites that have good deals on new/used cameras please let me know!
Thanks

Best buy would be 1d markI, you should get it for that price used. Without lens ofc, but 50mm 1.8 is real cheap and good lens

I think for 550 you can probably get a Canon Digital Rebel XS/EOS 1000D or Canon Digital Rebel XTI with kit lens. They are both very good cameras with very similar performances.
I believe Nikon D40 and D60 are just too uhh stripped down and they can't use all the newer Nikon lenses.

lol it's funny that you just made this thread because I just got home from the local camera store where I just bought a new EOS 40D biggrin.gif

canon 400d > nikon d40

there is no af motor on cheap nikons, so you need lenses that have one. Those cheap nikons are good if you want to use some old manual lenses.

allso 400d > 1000d, since 1000d only has 7 focus points and 400d has 9 focus points, other way theyr quite similar.

ah didn't know that XS/1000D got less af points but it's weird though because I have seen XTI body going for only 400 dollars ohmy.gif while XS cost like 500+

it costs more because its new, not because it would be eny better

1000d is more like 350d in a new body

Lol, dunno where you would find a Mark-I for $500 used...
That's like finding a Ferrari for $50k used. Not gonna happen.

edit: and a 40D is about $200-300 more than a 450d.
$1099 Amazon (body only)

You want some lenses too, right?

I would suggest Nikon D60/D40X (Or if you can find one, a D50)
OR, a Canon XS/1000D.

All of which are very great beginner dslr's.

I wouldn't go out and drop $1000+ on a DSLR if it's your first dslr...

Edit: @ Antichrist, a Mark II is $6499 (USED, reg $12,000 Amazon.ca)
So, how much would 1 step lower be? My guess is around the $3K spot.
