the f number. I know you have to use pretty narrow aperture to create starbursts and yours are like really "strong" and apparent and I guess you used a tripod too when you too that pic tongue.gif

I used F16. And yes I used a tripod. biggrin.gif

It would be crazy without a tripod! xD

lol not that I am nickpicking here but it spells tripod. "Tripot" sounds just too funny almost like something you can smoke biggrin.gif
well a tripod definitely helps but I believe it's still possible to take good night pics hand held biggrin.gif all you need is a camera with good high ISO performance, a fast lens with IS and steady hands - lol
but of course tripod is necessary if you want to get some nice starbursts like those in your pics since I doubt any human being can hold a camera absolutely still for one or two seconds biggrin.gif

Haha. Try-pot. biggrin.gif

I did it once hand held, and it did not worked out very well.

Maybe later tonight I will go out and take some more night photos. biggrin.gif

oh its fun to take night photos. I used to do that all the time during the summer and fall. The night life is very interesting in big cities and you can find quite a lot of stuff to take pics of but taking photos of people in the night is hard though. You would probably need a fast lens, like ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM to get some good night portrait pics

uh USM is short for Ultra Sonic Motor and it makes the lens focus fast and makes almost no noise
I've heard those lenses without USM, like the kit lens you've got with your XSI/450D, are slow and noisy tongue.gif

hmm if you are into night photography you probably should get a lens with wide aperture. the ef 50mm f/1.8 II is a cheap lens and good one even though the build quality is poor but I am sure if you dont plan on to drop it or anything it should be satisfy your need for a night photo lens unless you want to zoom too. then you may want to look at ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM which cost like 1200 dollars or the much cheaper Sigma or Tamron 17-50 something f/2.8 lenses
