I'm really not looking to spend much more on lighting. I have one strobe that I own, a YN-560 and then I can probably steal the schools two 580's over the summer. I have two wireless receivers, so I'd have to get another for a three light set up.

I'm thinking the most I'll have to spend is around $1500. This is for the new lens and all the set up.

I'll probably get the 100L so that's around 1k right there..
~$150 for the backdrop

Then whatever else.. Probably the reflectors and stands for them.

Good choice on the 100 2.8 L IS Macro for portraits. Everyone else swears on the 135 :D

x2 of these reflectors is what I have. They're very sturdy.

Have you heard anything about Sigmas 105 2.8? I really would love to get the 100L, but it might be a little to much for me to get everything with that as well.

Eh, never mind that anyway. I think if I have to save money I'm still going to get the 100L. I will just make due without other things.

You don't need reflectors immediately. Heck, you may not even need flash if you focus on a more outside- look. Use diffused and sunlight-gelled flash outside and you've got a win/win combo.
The 100L is one of the lens I'd get if I were starting off. It's honestly got more uses than the 135L

I haven't heard about sigma. I avoid off-brands unless it's Zeiss.

So basically, I should just get some gels and the 100L to start?

I can use a shoot through umbrella to fill in some shadows or if I'm shooting against the sun.

Gels remove that ugly flash look when outside, along with diffusion. Shoot with your subject's back toward the sun and it will benefit you in that it will light up their hair nicely. That way you can expose for the background and use flash. You'll avoid eye socket shadows. Finally, you don't want people facing the sun much, since they tend to squint. You can also get creative with sun glare. Flash + sun glare + good post processing is win.

Yes, gels + 100L is good.

Play along with these:

Offer some free shoots, but don't give anything. They'll order a-la-carte.

I think she's worth it. Think about the facebook option.
Try to sell bigger photos, as these make a bigger impact for future clients.
