I think alot of people dont actually understand completely meaning of " post work ".
For me is a must to do somekind of "post work" every time since im shooting only RAW. Also theres nothing wrong to make quality of photo better with photoshop or any other editing program, just dont have to go extreme with editing ^^
People who edit photos themselves will see anyway how much "post work" has been done, and will give right critiques for it .
Both of these. God knows if I didnt shoot everything in RAW Id always have slightly tinted red photos with bleh contrast.
About the portrait/pet/human thing, if I were to shoot a human subject Id want it to be my daughter, but of course everyone knows what my daughter looks like therefore Im pretty much instantly disqualified (as I found out in the first contest I entered). Apparently no one here likes it if they can tell whose is whose >.>
