Less pixels spread over a larger sensor would mean the lens would have to be sharper...?

If pixels are tighter on the 7d sensor, you would get away with a lot more.. ?

I don't get how something smaller and more dense could be more demanding in sharpness compared to something that is larger and less dense.

Especially when you consider pixel density on medium format backs. Shitloads sharper than full frame sensors.

I am in a similar situation, my idea is:

while I am waiting for an offer on the new 5D I look forused old ones. If I can find a cheap one I save money for lenses, if not I will go at least on Xmas on a new one!

Pros:

Higher resolution
Higher ISO
Less noise at high ISO
Better weather sealing
Movie mode
Live view (very useful for shooting on a tripod with manual focus)
Better screen
Automatic dust removal on sensor (very very helpful on a large sensor)

Cons:

Double the price
Won't necessarily take better looking pictures - higher resolution yes, but resolution isn't everything

I think it comes down to what lenses you have?  Money is better invested in lenses.  What do you have right now?

doesent 5d mkII have auto iso?

id like to add highlight tone priority and custom my menu.

check out reviews from pdreview because there is every function of both cameras listed

Yes, the 5DII has auto iso and the 5D classic does not. Also, the 5D classic does not display ISO in the viewfinder as the more modern cameras do.

The 5D classic does show it's age in terms of features, but the IQ is still there. Don't get me wrong though, the 5DII is better in just about every way other than price.

hmmmmm another advantage of going for a used Mk II would propably be the higher chance to find one with a low amount of actuations, since the bodies are much younger. but then again, 1600 bucks are far from what I was willing to spend at first.

Trust me, if you're planning to make money off it, it's worth the expense.

ye I´m just pretty unsure about how to start my freelancing. how do I get applications, how do I find the right clientele, how do I charge them? I´m not really sure as of yet how much I can charge for my services. I dont have a portfolio website yet, even though it´s planned for almost a year now. etc etc etc.......

What country / relative location do you live in? How heavily populated is it?

I live in a rather small city in germany with around 300.000 people. most of the photo shops died out, not sure about actual photographers, but it sure isnt the perfect place to be for a photographer. a good point might be the fact that the competition isnt as huge as in a metropolises for instance.

How far are you from major metropolitan areas? Can you drive there?

Also, can you list the gear you have?

I have the same problem as you, except my city has 600k, and I have to compete with very cheap Mexican photographers that PP the living crap out of everything just 20 minutes across the border. Smaller cities only means that there are less people that appreciate good, creative photography and want everything cheap. You have to base your demographics on that.

Can you list the top 10 businesses or freelance photographers that would most directly compete with you? Include retail stores (such as Wal Mart photo centers here in the U.S.)
