@ Kratos since your Cruiser topic was closed...
This is what I meant by an attentive horse.
This picture is far from being artistic.
Just took it after my cousin gave me a hand with my horses today.
Unless you take a picture of a bucking or rearing horse, you want him to have the ears pointed like on this picture.
Also, anyone has any advice on how I could take a picture of a dark horse, without having the background overexposed, or the horse too dark?
This one is not even that dark and my background is totally unsatisfying....

Also please don't laugh at my horse's mane...
My field has so many of those crappy plants that stick in the mane and tail... I had to cut it short....

Hehe, I don't know how many people know half a thing about a horse Marie that they will make fun of it, at first I thought it was just lying off the other side. My fathers horse has a mohawk cut for about the first foot of his mane and then it flows down his back.
As far as a solution to your problem, underexpose the entire photo and then use a fill flash on the horse, it should help make the background darker and the horse should be bright enough. I have yet to try taking photos of a darker horse anywhere other than outside and I was just messing around when we had him out for a little snack.
