d3100 has better ISO handling, higher max ISO and overall better IQ, but the difference with overall IQ isnt all that big.

Well I guess it's pretty much the same when comparing either 40D or 50D with the newer Rebels, T2i and T3i but I am pretty sure that a lot of ppl would choose the former two because of the ergonomics and speed. That is if HD video is not important to them. hmm which kind of remind me that I haven't even taken a single video clip with my 5D yet :D not that I know how to do it or have any clue on how to post process HD video clips   Oh and do you know if my Sandisk Extreme III 8Gb is fast enough for shooting HD videos?

If it's Class 6 or higher it should just fine.

yeah video is better ... but still.. theres not THAT huge a different on the 2 overall.. considering d90 with lens is almost twice the price

there is a lot between them
AF as mentioned, as well as the D90 has its own built in AF motor
sml top screen (doesnt seem much but very useful)
fps on the D90 are higher (but yeah not always important)
ISO 800+ seems better on the D90
think IQ is the same

just for the af i would get d90 over d3100. also the 18-55 kit lens is in most people top 10 nikon lens's of all time. its so sharp. i own mostly top end pro lens but the 18-55 is still as sharp as any of them. the only drawback is the f3.5 aperture and its made out of plastic. but if it breaks buy another one they are so cheap. Any one that says otherwise has never owned/ used one

true the 18-55mm is better than the 24-105mm but the latter is more useful to most ppl as a walkabout lens

took my friend to get a lens for his (my old) camera
he ended up getting the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and so far i am impressed with it for a reasonable price
its only a little more expensive than the 18-105 kit lens
this is the 1st DSLR he owned, so he has an awesome start

No doubt that overall the d90 is better.. but consdering the price , I still believe u get more for each $ spent if u buy the d3100..

http://www.dslrphoto.com/dslr/high-iso-noise-comparison-between-nikon-d3100-versus-nikon-d90,19789.html

d3100 seems to render colors better at high ISO and nearly 1 stop better noise handling. and overall slightly better image quality

d90 has af motor, better screen, bigger built, better controls(still not close to canon 40d controls haha)
