Well normally what I do is I just double click the raw file and it opens up in photoshop... and then it shows a bunch of settings I can change, which are pretty cool.
I don't know about gimp though... maybe try opening it up in gimp and see what happens?
I haven't read it all yet, but I found something about raw and gimp on flickr..

Do you transfer the files on your computer first or are they to be used in the camera?
Cause when I xfer them they auto convert in jpg.....
