UsedRegina is a very good place to look for used and cheap battery grips though right now there is only an ad for a used BG-E1 but I do remember seeing people selling used BG-E3 for under 100 bucks not long ago though I don't know if you want to drive all the way to Regina to buy a grip.

The extension tubes seem to work wonders and the sharpness seem to have retained too.
ok more questions here

Do the extension tubes affect AF speed? and do the minimum focus distance change?
I like the 0.9meter/3ft minimum focus distance of the 135L because I wouldn't scare away the bugs
Oh and what kind of tubes are you using? Kenko or Sigma? I know they are not Canon
