UsedRegina is a very good place to look for used and cheap battery grips though right now there is only an ad for a used BG-E1 but I do remember seeing people selling used BG-E3 for under 100 bucks not long ago though I don't know if you want to drive all the way to Regina to buy a grip.

Do the extension tubes affect AF speed? and do the minimum focus distance change?
I like the 0.9meter/3ft minimum focus distance of the 135L because I wouldn't scare away the bugs
Oh and what kind of tubes are you using? Kenko or Sigma? I know they are not Canon

Yeah, the tubes didn't degrade the image a whole lot. At least it isn't noticeable without pixel peeping.

The extension tubes affected the AF speed a whole lot. It's pretty impractical to use without a tripod, even on a tripod.. i need to "pre-focus" for AF to work, or else it just hunts.

As for MFD with the tubes.. The longer the tubes, the shorter the MFD is. You don't really magically increase magnification, it just allows you to get closer to the subject. The tubes that i'm using are Kenko tubes. I picked those up on Amazon. There isn't any elements in tubes so no point of spending the extra on Canon tubes. They work exactly the same, there are even cheaper alternatives on eeebay but i'm not so sure about using them on my body.. I've heard stories of them jamming.. aka stuck on the body or lens.
